I know my fellow readers from the gym hoped this was going to be my first post, but nah-I actually wanted them to just keep reading to realise there is more to me than zumba. So how did me and zumba meet-2009 when zumba was introduced in South Africa and I was one of the first people who went for the training through Virgin Active. Apparently Virgin Active was the only licenced institution to teach zumba,so I can say I was there when it all began, and i will still be here when the fly by nights have flown away.
Now who are the fly by nights-really,are we asking that question???those that get the certificate even if they can't dance or give a class without knowing what a count of 8 is,or even how to go with the beat, those that think its about showing off how good they are at dancing without caring about their members, zumba is not for people who cant improvise on stage and give the workout a brand which is them,,need I say more.(Zumba wants to make money all across the world and they will not fail you even if you whack,so if you want a qualification that you dont need to be totally legit for, then try get a zumba certificate, its that easy>>>
See Zumba has depth, its has structure and most importantly it zooms with the fitness element and the fun to make it zumba, not domba, not gomba, not ayoba kasi style. Not saying you cant bring your swagg on by localizing, actually that makes you more creative than always copying those dvds and doing exactly what those American chicks do.
Its important to bring your persona and swagg to the floor, but never forget the basics. I have recently moved to JHB and stood in for other instructors at the gym, needless to say it feels like I was under member-jab syndrome cos of the way I teach,I got called names like that crazy chick,or ohh my gosh that new chick is hectic..needless to say after all that the people still liked it and they started following me around the gyms, this feels good-extremely good but it felt like taking the class to another level is impossible if the person before you is whack,or doesn't know what they are doing.
My motto is-IF YOU DONT SWEAT IN TWO SONGS THEN WALK OUT THAT CLASS,THE INSTUCTOR IS BOGUS.
BENEFITS OF A REAL ZUMBA CLASS:LOOK OUT FOR:
- An unfit person will burn almost a 1000 calories in a well structured class.(YEP did you get that)grab your heart rate monitors/fitness watches>
- A fit person about 500-600 calories.
- If a person is not swagg lookable(shady wobblies,3 sizes more than you)how do you think they can make you drop a dress size or 2 if they still trying to drop 10 dress sizes.RUN A MILE.
- If they always dress in zumba clothes, they trying too hard so use discretion.(show offs trying to cover their 2 left feet, dressing the part, and acting is a different dance movie version(KWAITO,SOKKIE,MAYOBA(AYOBA STYLE),2 STEP e.t.c.
- Dance is a new trend for keeping fit and looking good,if you dont do it daily then at least do 2 classes a week. It will really help you.
- Fun,laughter and a peanut butter smoothie after class if you in my class..(LOL)
If you are that good why do you feel the need to trample on other instructors who love the zumba lifestyle? Should you not just stand out for the star you are?
ReplyDeleteAfter reading this I feel worried about what you say about us who attend classes - if instructors are bad, what about us? Are we just useless and there for you to have a good laugh?
I am saddened about this post :-(
Agggg shame,if you feel sad about what I have written seemingly you dont understand what a blog is, it for me to express my opinion hence I decided to speak about what I wana share, especially with the people that know me and the people I teach. Anonymous to me is a stanger who doesnt even deserve to be replied, thats why he/she remains anonymous and sorry to bust your bubble, I will never laugh at members that I teach(owe that to experience)I will yes for sure laugh at fake/get certificate without proper credentials zumba instructors who have depleted/sieved the meaning of zumba due to their own inadequacies, and the rest of us have to be subjected to rudeness from members cos of how we teach, there is no good or bad/there is a type of workout(intensity levels) I thot all the instructors watch the same videos. Haebo madoda.
DeleteWow Faith! It sounds wonderful, i would love to come and attend your classes! Can you please tell me more about it and where your classes are offered? Tried to search the Zumba and the VirginActive websites but could not trace you there? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteDear Faith,
ReplyDeleteIf you are teaching true ZumbaⓇ Fitness classes then you will know all about the brand and use it in the correct way. Read your license agreement. All licensed ZumbaⓇ instructors can be found on www.zumba.com and their class schedules can be posted on there (for the above poster looking for classes.)
I just did a search on zumba.com under 'find an instructor' for 'Faith' in South Africa and I got no results. Please post a link to your instructor profile or at least give your name and surname as on your certificate so that we can verify your validity as a licensed ZumbaⓇ instructor. Thank you.
There are many different types of instructor and that is the beauty of ZumbaⓇ Fitness: there is something and someone for everyone. As you claim to be a professional instructor then work to the industry ethics: that is, promote yourself and your own credentials and do not slate other instructors or indeed even the program you are attempting to promote! You only do yourself damage in this way.
Some instructors like to wear the ZumbawearⓇ apparel, and I am not too sure what you are getting at in saying:
"If they always dress in zumba clothes, they trying too hard so use discretion.(show offs trying to cover their 2 left feet, dressing the part, and acting is a different dance movie version(KWAITO,SOKKIE,MAYOBA(AYOBA STYLE),2 STEP e.t.c." To me this doesn't even make sense.
There are a lot of ZumbaⓇ instructors who love teaching ZumbaⓇ classes; they love their students; they love te brand; they love the music; they love the clothing...they are professionals using the brand to promote themselves and ZumbaⓇ. It's your choice if you want to wear it or not, but to put others down who do choose to wear it is juvenile.
I don't think you'll be winning any customers to you in writing in this way, especially your comments on how anyone can do it and licensed ZumbaⓇ instructors are either rubbish or show offs... you are only putting yourself down as a ZumbaⓇ instructor or you are showing your utter arrogance... It's very sad and disappointing to read comments like this from an ambassador of the program.
Well said, I fully agree with the above statement. I would not be surprised if this was someone from Zumba Head Office that made the comment. I suggest in addition to, thinking carefully what you write about Zumba, the brand, authenticity and Instructors, you pay attention to your spelling and grammar and use spell-check before you Blog. Social media is a platform where one publically displays IQ and EQ...
DeleteI am glad this post is causing a hooha especially the 2 Anonymous people that have decided to counter attack. To the both of you do not get me wrong,I love Zumba Fitness and everything that it represents. Nonetheless I hate the mediocrity that comes with it. Hence I speak about instructors that have no clue what they are doing. To the head office person(IF YOU ARE): You are right when you say there is someone for everyone, but we should'nt be caught up with just qualifying people because they love Zumba. Before there was Zumba there were other fitness programmes and I must say by far Zumba stands out for the fun and for the fitness that comes with it.Fitness agencies fail you if you write exams and you are not good enough, then you have to redo a course, hence I haven't heard anyone saying they failed a Zumba course. A true ambasaddor to any brand should be able to talk about the Good, the BAD and the Ugly, not always sugar coat even when they see mediocrity. Hence like Isaid before this blog is my opinion,it was nto written for Zumba or to discuss Zumba. It was written for the people that I teach hence they will understand the lingo, and the spelling mistakes and will never EMPHASIZE ON MY SPELLING ERRORS TO HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH MY IQ.There is always room for improvement. It would be fabolous if Zumba had a QC structure for its instructors especially because it is a huge programme that runs across the world.
DeleteAnd PS: Anonymous 2: Those spelling errors are for editors like you to edit other people's work: GET YOUR OWN BLOG AND WRITE YOUR PERFECT ENGLISH IN IT. Oh and about EQ,I guess I can be emotional about this brand cos I don't want to see it go down the drain like the rest of other fitness programmes/be misrepresented. And just so that you know there are so many instructors that have qualified through Virgin who are facing the same dilemma when they have to stand in for just got my certificate type of instructors.
